I mentioned on Tuesday, that I am preaching on Jubilee this coming Sunday. Just in case I don't get another opportunity, I am uploading and posting a hand-out that I will be using during my talk. As you can see it leaves loads of space for people to jot down quotes/ideas/questions that leap out at them. In the final section, we are going to brain-storm practical ways that these folk can apply the teaching (kinda like I did at the end of this article). The questions are below, but you can download a PDF of the hand-out here.
(1) What did Jesus say? Luke is the only gospel writer who includes the details of Jesus' opening sermon: Luke 4:16-21. (2) What did he mean? Leviticus 25 and Isaiah 61 : the (50th) year of Jubilee when debts were cancelled, slaves released, wealth redistributed and land restored to its original owners. (3) What does it matter? Mt. 6:9-13; Mt. 18:23-35; Mt. 19:16-26; Lk. 18:18-30; Lk. 7:22; Lk. 24:45-49. In Luke, the meanings of Christ, gospel, forgiveness and redemption are wrapped up with Jubilee! (4) What shall we do?
Clearly, my focus here is very much on the giving and generosity application of Jubilee. In that sense it is a watered-down version. However, I was asked to speak on the topic of Giving and am using the occasion to sneak in a wider framework, motivation and purpose for gracious generosity. So, if this watered-down version simply whets people's appetites to further explore the topic, I will be very happy.
